Please don’t tell me what to do; teach me how to think. Development is an ongoing process. Intentionality is the most important thing. Lead through asking questions. Development isn’t that efficient; it’s messy. Explain your decision-making to show them how you arrived at that conclusion. Ask them, “What would you do?” 2. Don’t assume that your priorities are my priorities. Don’t assume that just because a priority makes sense to you that it makes sense to your team member as well. Communicate what needs to be prioritized to your team members. If you’re ever unsure, just ask. 3. Be present when I’m with you. As a leader, sometimes we can hold ourselves above the standard that we have for our team members. Be present with your team members to communicate that you value their time rather than multitasking or getting distracted. Be available to your teams. 4. One “Good job” can carry me a long way. Positive reinforcement means the world to your team members. Words of affirmation and hand-written notes go a long way. 5. I want to be cared for as a person more than an employee. Invest into your team members personally. People who feel cared for will stick around longer and be happy to show up for work. View them as people, not machines.
